B-25 Mitchell Ultimate Film Collection - DVD #16682
Here you can see some spectacular footage of the Mitchell in action, as well as getting a look at the training materials allied pilots saw when they were transitioning to the B-25.
Film 1:
"How to Fly the B-25"
(1944,B&W, 21:28)
This film was produced by the US Navy in association with North American to provide pilots transitioning into the B-25 with the essential information they would need to effectively fly the Mitchell. Taxiing, Take-Offs, Aerial Maneuvers, Approaches and Landings are all covered.
Film 2:
"Air Operations: Lae Salamaua"
(1944,B&W, 29:34)
This film describes one of the major battles of the 1943 New Guinea capaign. Using maps and charts, the strategy behind this important battle is revealed. Combining the strengths of ground forces and the versatility of air power, the Allies were able to overcome the difficulties presented by the dense jungle terrain. This film contains some amazing in-cockpit footage, as well as tail-gunner images that take one's breath away.
Film 3:
"Winged Artillery"
(1944,Color, 24:58)
"And so, in less than 30 seconds the action is over - 30 seconds of action that required the expenditure of thousands of man hours of labor. In those 30 seconds, 9 planes flying through intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, unloaded 7 tons of bombs, 63 rounds of 75mm ammunition, and thousands of .50 cal machine gun slugs to blast (Japanese) gun emplacements, barracks, and runways."
The story of the 7th Army Air Forces 48th Bomber group, based in the Gilbert Islands as they prepare for and fly a treetop-level strike against Japanese forces at Mille. Some of the best period color footage of the B-25 to be found anywhere.
Film 4:
"Doolittle's B-25s Attack Japan"
(1943, B&W, 4:43)
On April 18, 1942, 16 B-25s launched off the aircraft carrier Hornet with the mission of attacking targets in Japan. After being spotted by a Japanese patrol boat, it was decided to launch the bombers early, at a range of over 800 miles, rather than the intended 450-600. While the raids did not inflict the level of damage that Japan would experience as the war progressed, the Doolitle Tokyo Raid was a huge victory for morale on the home-front. This short film contains actual footage of the Doolittle Raiders in action!
