MAAM-SIM Douglas R4D / DC-3 / C-47 9th Edition CD-ROM for MS-FS2002 & 2004 #16135
Add-on aircraft package for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 and 2004-'Century of Flight'.
NOTE: A free FSX Basic Compatibility Upgrade for this aircraft, and many other free enhancements, are available on the MAAM-SIM Free Stuff Page.
MAAM-SIM's first aircraft add-on was the museum's Naval Air Transport Service R4D-6 (DC-3). The add-on was first produced in 1999 when the team was called "The R4D Team". Now a completely new, from-the-ground-up redesign using Gmax has taken the famous Douglas transport to the next level.
The new R4D / DC-3 / C-47 Package in the latest edition still includes MAAM's Douglas, in both gleaming bare-metal and silver paint finishes. But that is just the beginning. There are also two civilian DC-3's included - a United Air Lines passenger model, the Mainliner "City of San Francisco" and the British European Airways cargo carrier, "Sir Eric Geddes".
Then you get a squadron of military models: First there is the rare prototype seaplane version, the XC-47C, also available in a civilian livery.
The four-plane D-Day Expansion Pack is included:
'Sugar Blues' was a C-47A of the 89th Troop Carrier Squadron, 438th Troop Carrier Group, 53d Troop Carrier Wing. She is depicted as she appeared on June 5/6th 1944, in full D-Day markings. Squadron Tactical Code 4U, call-sign N, tail number 2100795. The 438th led the airborne invasion of Normandy, dropping the first units of the 101st Airborne into France. The ‘Sugar Blues’ model is configured to carry cargo which, at a key-stroke, you can unload cargo to reveal the folded bucket seats.
‘Sugarpuss’ is a C-47A of the 90th Troop Carrier Squadron of the same group as ‘Sugar Blues’ The squadron identifier is Q7 and shows chalk number 15. This is the number used by the paratroopers to identify their aircraft for a drop. This ship differs from her group mate in that she is equipped with the smallest of the three types of carburetor air scoops fitted to P&W 1830 type engines, while “Sugar Blues” features the largest scoops, sometimes called “desert scoops” which are ram and non-ram, filtered intakes. ‘Sugarpuss’ also is equipped with the glider-tow tail, rather than the pointed tail cone of her sister. “Sugarpuss’ is configured to drop U.S. paratroopers.
The Douglas Dakota Mk III, serial KG374, marked YS-DM is without doubt the most famous Dakota in RAF service. This aircraft of 271 Squadron, 46 Group, RAF Transport Command, based on Down Ampney, Gloucestershire was piloted by Flt. Lt. Lord, DFC, VC. KG374 is depicted as she was painted for Operation Market Garden, the attack on Arnhem, Netherlands in September of 1944. Her invasion stripes have been hurriedly painted over on the upper surfaces to better camouflage the aircraft whilst on the ground in foreign territory in subsequent months. This aircraft was lost in a gallant and well-documented action over Arnhem while dropping supplies to beleaguered British troops. For his action, Flt. Lt. Lord was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the only such recognition given to a pilot of RAF Transport Command. This model is configured to air drop cargo.
Douglas Dakota Mk III YS-DJ, KG444, "Pie Eyed Piper of Barnes", was piloted by Flt. Lt. "Professor" Jimmy Edwards, DFC, also of 271 Squadron, 46 Group. This representation shows KG444 in D-Day invasion markings. KG444 was later shot down on Sep 21, 1944 at Arnhem, Holland. This model is configured to drop UK paratroopers. The two paratrooper models feature an animated paratroop exit panel and folding bucket seats.
New in the 9th Edition is the "All Theaters" C-47 Expansion Pack and Virtual Cockpit Upgrade. Six new C-47 models of the USAAF, RAF, RAAF and CNAC in liveries from the ETO, CBI, SWPA, and Med Theaters of Operation. The planes feature U.S. and UK paratroop and para-drop cargo effects. The included VC Upgrade incorporates numerous fully functional controls, radio and navigator's compartments and animated pilots.
One further addition to the 9th Edition is the Danish Dakota Friends restored C-47, OY-BPB.
The extensive html User's Manual includes dozens of clear diagrams and instructions. Perhaps best of all, the User's Manual also features a number of instructional videos in which MAAM President and Chief Pilot, Russ Strine, demonstrates and discusses every phase of operation of the R4D from the real #50819's cockpit. These are all Windows Media Video files (wmv), played right in your browser by simply passing your cursor over the desired video box in the manual.
On the knee-board, you will find a complete set of interactive checklists and detailed reference pages for the aircraft.
The CD also includes a scanned, genuine, 96 page World War II Pilot Training Manual for the C-47.
