  the MID-ATLANTIC AIR MUSEUM STORE :: VIDEO - CD - DVD :: The Piper Cub / L4 Grasshopper - 2 DVD Set

  The Piper Cub / L4 Grasshopper - 2 DVD Set #16685
The Piper Cub / L4 Grasshopper - 2 DVD Set  This two DVD set contains 9 Vintage films Starring the Piper Cub, also known as the L-4 "Grasshopper"!

The Piper Cub was the primary trainer for a generation of pilots. From its introduction in the early days of Piper's Lock Haven, PA factory, until today, thousands of pilots have earned their wings in this timeless aircraft.

Disc 1:

Film 1:
"The Construction of a Light Airplane"
(1943, B&W, 27:15)
Filmed at the Piper Airplane Factory in Lock Haven, PA, this film shows the processes used by the factory workers who assembled the Cub. Covered are all the major operations used to construct small aircraft: Welding, Rigging, Covering, and more!

Film 2:
"Preflight Inspection - Airplane"
(1945, B&W, 16:14)
Follow along as a professional mechanic pre-flights a Piper Cub, pointing out the important areas of special attention and potential wear and tear.

Film 3:
"The Bray-Otis series of Flight Training films."(6 parts)
(1943, B&W, 54:30)
This 6-part series of training films uses in-cockpit footage as well as "chalk-talk" covering all the basic fundamentals of flight. While some of the material in these films is not necessarily current, and is not recommended as part of any flight instruction curriculum, this is a great series of films which give a very interesting insight into the way primary flight training was conducted in the 1940's!

Disc 2:

Film 1:
"Aircraft Work - Powerplant Maintenance"
(1945, B&W, 1:56;27)
In this film, the Cub's 4-cylinder air-cooled Continental Engine is removed from the airplane and subjected to a complete tear-down. The techniques shown will also apply to just about any small air-cooled engine. This is a very interesting film which does a great job of explaining basic overhaul techniques, as well as showing how simple the old engines were, and what it actually took to rebuild them. A great little film!
